People with heavy debt think that they have serious problems in life that are almost unbearable. “Attorney, we can’t sleep because our creditors are hounding us day and night! They threaten us with lawsuits and wage garnishment and bank levies!” Well, yes, if you have too much debt, it does create a financial problem for you but we can certainly get you out of that situation by getting rid of your debts with a bankruptcy while you keep all your assets and income. Once I had a client who killed himself before we filed his bankruptcy because he could not continue living. If this is what you are thinking, don’t do it. You owe creditors money not your life! Let’s put things in the right perspective, ok? In America, you can get rid of debt with a bankruptcy but still keep most if not all of your assets. So, there is a solution to your debt problems. In America, you can get a fresh start in life without debt and be productive again. This is the simple truth and I kid you not.

Let’s compare your debt problems to the sufferings in the Book of Lamentations so you can get a correct perspective of the weight of your financial problems. Jeremiah wrote this in 580 B.C. to describe the sufferings of the Jews who are destroyed by their enemies because they have been unfaithful to God:

“Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners. We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows…Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. Our fathers have sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands. We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. Women have been ravished in Zion, and virgins in the town of Judah. Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders shown no respect. Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood… Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing turned to mourning…”

If you were an Israelite at the time that Jeremiah speaks of, financial problems that you suffer from now would be the least of your problems. At that time, you would be a slave to your former slaves with no asset, no roof over your head, and no food to eat and feverish from hunger!
