Healthy Eating Tips for Moon Cakes

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival !

In recent years, there are many new kinds of mooncakes appear in the market. Besides the traditional mooncakes and Chaozhou style mooncakes, there are snowy mooncakes, ice-cream mooncakes, fruity mooncakes, and healthy mooncakes. Most mooncakes are high in fats, high in calorie, and contain lots of sugar. Therefore, people should be careful when they choose their mooncakes.

Due to the portion size of the traditional mooncakes, it is easy to consume excessive calories and fat. Both the pastry and stuffing contain a high amount of fats. Lard is sometimes used in order to make a soft and thin pastry. Lotus Paste is prepared with oil which give its rich taste. Moreover, the salty egg yolk contains more than 600mg of cholesterol (whereas our daily allowance for cholesterol is 300mg a day), so the people who are overweight or are high in cholesterol are recommended to limit the consumption of mooncakes.

Snowy Mooncakes Are Healthier Than Traditional Mooncakes

Snowy mooncakes taste lighter, and it is not as oily as the traditional mooncakes. Its moocakes’ skins are made by glutinous rice. As a result, their fat content is a lot less than the traditional mooncakes. However, the stuffing also contains high amount of sugar, and over consumption may still cause overweight.

Low Sugar Mooncakes Can Be High in Fats And High in Calories

There are a lot of “Healthy” or “Low Sugar” mooncakes in markets. However, laboratory tests show that their calorie content might be similar to the traditional mooncakes. Although the low sugar mooncakes contain less sugar, their fat content is as much as the traditional one, about 40%-50% of total calories. Therefore, “Low Sugar” mooncakes cannot be treated as a low calorie option.

中秋節快樂! 中秋節又是大家準備選購月餅的日子。近年月餅款式層出不窮,除了傳統的蛋黃蓮蓉月餅、潮式月餅外,還有冰皮月餅、雪糕月餅、水果月餅,以及講求健康的低糖月餅。絕大部份月餅都屬高脂肪、高熱量,而且糖份亦不少,所以在選擇月餅時要格外小心。

傳統月餅不單份量大,容易吃得過量,而且不論焗皮、餡料的用油量都相當驚人。傳統餅皮為造出軟簿的效果,會以豬油和麵粉搓成;蓮蓉亦以油炒香;再加上鹹蛋黃膽固醇含量極高,一個已有超過600毫克(每天不可超過300亳克) ,絕對不適合肥胖或患高膽固醇人士進食。

冰皮月餅較傳統月餅健康

冰皮月餅味道較傳統月餅清,淡不太膩口,加上以糯米皮代替傳統焗皮,脂肪含量亦因此而大大降低,相對比較健康。但要注意的是其餡料糖份仍然很高,多吃同樣會致肥。

低糖月餅同樣高脂高熱量

現時市面亦有些標榜健康或低糖的月餅,但經化驗發現熱量與傳統月餅相距不大。低糖月餅當中的糖份雖然較傳統月餅為少,但脂肪含量卻與傳統月餅相約均,約佔整個月餅熱量的四至五成,同屬高脂一族。所以,千萬別以為低糖便可多吃。
