Goliath was a Philistine giant who was 9 feet tall. The Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. The two armies faced each other. Israel’s army was led by King Saul who was Israel’s first king but his life turned to tragedy because he did not trust God, my God, the God of Moses and Israel, who sent to mankind his only Son, Jesus Christ, who became man through the Blessed Virgin Mary and who willingly suffered and died on the cross, to redeem us from the consequences of sin, so that we may have eternal life with them for eternity in paradise because They love us so.
Goliath came out each day for forty days wearing full armor, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. King Saul and the whole army of Israel were terrified of Goliath. Saul was tall and handsome but he was only 6-ft-1 and he was the tallest among the Israelites. Imagine a 9-foot tall Arnold Swarzenneger at his prime with all his muscles bulging! That’s a pretty scary sight for a normal 5-foot-6 soldier to behold. No Bruce Lee, Manny Pacquiao or Stallone who could have kicked Goliath’s ass among the Israelites.
But they had David, the youngest son of Jesse, who sent him to the battle lines to bring back news of his brothers. David was a teenager, probably 16 years old. David heard Goliath shouting his daily defiance and he saw the great fear stirred within the men of Israel. “That’s one bad ass nobody should mess with,” said David to himself. David then responded to Goliath shouting “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of God?” Goliath replies “Even though I am not circumcised, I wash it every day with the blood of an Israelite!”
So David volunteered to fight Goliath. It took some persuasion, but King Saul finally agreed to let David fight against the giant. When Goliath saw David, he laughed and shouted “I shit bigger than you, Israelite!” Dressed in his simple tunic, white with a blue band tailored by Christian Dior, carrying his shepherd’s staff, slingshot and a pouch full of stones, David approached Goliath. The giant cursed him, hurling threats and insults in French.
David said to Goliath, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied… today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air…and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel, the one true God… it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
As Goliath moved in for the kill, David reached into his bag and slung one his stones at Goliath’s head. Finding a hole in the armor, the stone sank into Goliath's forehead and the giant fell face down to the ground. David then took Goliath’s sword, killed him and then cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. So the Israelites pursued, chasing and killing them and plundering their camp.
David’s faith in God caused him to look at the giant from a different perspective. Goliath even though he was a giant, was merely a mortal man defying an all-powerful God. David looked at the battle from God’s point of view. If we look at our debts as giant problems and impossible situations, from God’s perspective, we realize that God will fight for us and with us. Pray to our God and maybe He might tell you that the right solution to your giant debt problems is Chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcy. Stop for a minute and refocus. You should be able to see the situation from God’s vantage point, just like David who saw Goliath from God’s point of view.
